Series: 4 Episode: 6
First broadcast on 2 November 1989, nine days before Remembrance Sunday. Featuring Geoffrey Palmer as Field Marshall Douglas Haig.
General Melchett has finally given the command for the company to go "over the top", that is to say, charge into No Man's Land and to their certain deaths.
Blackadder pretends to be mad by sticking a pair of underpants on his head and sticking two pencils up his nose so that he can be invalided back to Blighty. Unfortunately the penalty for pretending to be mad is death by firing squad, so that plan ends in failure.
His next plan is to appeal to Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig - a former comrade whose life Blackadder saved at the Battle of Mboto Gorge in 1892 - to get him out of the push. Haig returns the favour with an all-too familiar plan.
Thwarted in all his attempts to escape the doomed mission, Blackadder's intended response rhymes with 'clucking bell'.
As he awaits dawn with his men George and Baldrick, they are joined by Darling, who has been given a front line posting by Melchett in a gesture of friendship. For once, they are on the same side, and even George realises, in a fit of honesty, that he's afraid.
